castle?
During a 3 week trip through the UK & Ireland we decided to spend 1 night in a castle & this one sounded lovely. I did read some comments that this was more of a Disney castle, but didn't let that worry me. Disney castle? Maybe if Walt was on crack. This is nothing more than an old hotel with a castle facade. Upon arrival, after a 5 hour drive from Killarney (because the last hour is up a narrow, twisty road), we went to check in only to be told that the hotel was overbooked & they got us a room elsewhere. EXCUSE ME?? Needless to say, we told them that was unacceptable. (especially since the room was prepaid). The owner came over immediately, apologized & got us a room (funny how that magically appeared) & also bought us dinner. Good save, but we already had a bad taste in our mouths. Because the hotel is in the middle of nowhere, you have to stay on the grounds at night & there's really nothing to do. The owners sing & play piano. Very nice & folksy, but not our cup of tea. My recommendation, if you're looking for a real castle to stay in, go elsewhere. If you're looking for a place to just relax & not do much (you can golf & horseback ride off premises) then this could work for you.

Restorative qualities
Abbeyglen Castel Hotel was marvelous. We were exhaused after driving all over Ireland and arrived a bit prior to check in. They had us rest in the common room a few minutes while getting the room sorted. Tea and coffee were offered as well. The separate bedroom and living room areas were fabulous and the fireplace, although not functioning in August, was beautiful. The king sized canopy bed was super comfortable. The spa style tube was truly a luxury after all our traveling about. We could walk to the city, enjoy good meals and pubs and wander back. The pub in the hotel was quiet and restful until the music started. So one could have the best of both worlds. The grounds were nice. Breakfast with the B&B option was the best I had anywhere. It was way over the top of others. We had absolutely no complaints.

Short walk from hotel
The City is fairly small but has numerous pubs and restaurants, banks and a grocery store. It is an easy walk from the Castle.
