Gershwin Hotel New York

Subjectively: The Gershwin is like a love child spawned by an IKEA and a Salvation Army...given up for adoption to be raised by an American art professor. The decor was interesting but slapped together. I didn't mind the experience, but those who are less tolerant should consider the following... Objectively: The water temperature never stayed consistent...and the last day of my visit was TOTALLY OUT. No water in the room or downstairs at the coffee shop. Objectively: The elevator was intermittently functional throughout my visit...but there was always a note saying that assistance was available should it be required. All in all, this place wasn't terrible...but it certainly needed work.

The website I used to make my reservation was not very good at giving room details nor was the hotel's website. The great deal that I got was not for a room with one bunk bed in it, but it was for a room with 6-8 beds. Additionally, there was a $35 service charge for amenities if you did not bring your own. I did not bring my own as I was anticipating a hotel not a hostel. This hotel should not be recommended online or even offered if it's services cannot be more accurately portrayed.

We stayed here on our trip to New York. You are right around the corner from the empire state building. The hotel itself may not be a super luxury hotel but has everything you need on top of its unique art , character and great staff. I would recommend it to anyone visiting who wants a unique experience and to be seconds away from everything you want to do in New York. Overall great stay!

Very little space in the shared rooms. Extremely expensive and uncomfortable compared to any cheap hotel you will find outside Manhattan... BUT it was very clean and it was right between the Empire State Building and The Flatiron Building. Both are in clear view of the street. If you're alone on a budget and you only need a shower and a place to lay your head, this is the place to go. If you're traveling with a family or a group on a budget, you should look at hotels in Long Island City.

Great hotel for great price. Kind and friendly hotel staff and nice comfortable rooms with awesome hallway decor. Would definitely stay here again.

Everything was great. The only thing was the shower was kinda yucky. We never got a good temperature!

This is the perfect Place for us in Manhattan. We loved the austerity and the edgy aesthetic. It was quiet with very little street noise even though we had an open window. The clientele seemed to appreciate quiet as well. The Birch Cafe was excellent for breakfast. The staff were friendly and competent. The tv in the room is mounted on a high bracket, which was nice in that I did not even notice it was there until our third night (I abhor the usual hotel practice of huge tv sets domInating the room).

Friendly staff. i booked the dormitory style since i was leaving the next day and was surprise that the hotel was nicer than expected. the bathroom was clean. hotel room was clean as well.

Be careful when booking this hotel. You may be booking a 10 bed dorm room without realizing it. There is no mention of it untill you get your confirmation email. The dorm rooms are very cramped. There is very limited space to put your luggage. No lockers are available, so bring a small lock to secure your suitcase. They do offer a small deposit box to put small valuables. The bathroom is equally cramped and not in very good shape. The toilet seat was broken, the showerhead fell off the wall, and it was in general disrepair. The walls are paper thin. Any noise in the hall or adjoining rooms can be clearly heard. Overall I would not recommend this hotel to others.

I stayed in the dormitory room and it was much nicer than I expected reading other reviews. I had read that the room did not come with towels, but we each had a bath and hand towel and the bathroom had a mat for the shower. Everyone in the room was really nice and no one really bothered anyone else. The concierge was very helpful as were the desk staff. The coffee house next door, Birch, was AHHH-Mazing. If you're traveling alone, on a budget or don't mind sharing a room, I would recommend this place to you. Right in the center of everything. Walking distance to many of the sights.
