historic hotel, very good suite for the money, excellent bed, a few screws loose - this section of norfolk is a little more "iffy" than one might prefer, but I had no troubles.

I plan events, and stay in some really nice hotels, so I do admit I have high standards. However, when I’m actually paying for my own hotels for personal travel, my budget is what usually rules. So, when I was going to a show at the Chrysler Center in Norfolk, and saw the decent rate at a newly-renovated hotel right across the street, I decided to take a chance, even though it wasn’t a part of a chain. The hotel is clearly not finished with their renovations yet – the sign was just a vinyl sign over the previous property’s lighted sign. But the hotel is getting there. The décor is reminiscent of a funky boutique hotel, and there are interesting touches throughout the public space. Staff members at the front desk were very friendly, but didn’t seem like they quite knew what they were doing. It took a while to check in when we were the only ones there, and then check out seemed to confuse the desk clerk. I just assumed everyone was new. The sleeping rooms are an interesting contrast of upscale boutique and cheap highway motel. The furnishings and bedding were fun and interesting and modern, as was the marble vanity/sink in the bathroom. There was also a microwave and small refrigerator in the room, which I didn’t expect. However, then there were stark contrasts – the large, bulky tube tv; the cheap toiletries with some generic name like ‘beach mist’; and the desk lamp with an outlet that was placed so you couldn’t fit a plug into it. And then there was the weird electrical outlet situation. The beds were sleep number beds, which required that each one was plugged in to be able to work. There was also a clock radio on the bedside table, and a lamp above it. Well, there was only a 2-plug outlet between the beds, so one bed was plugged in and the clock was plugged in, leaving one bed unplugged, and the lamp unplugged. So, we had to choose whether we wanted beds, light, or clock plugged in. We decided to plug in both beds, adjust them, and then plug in the clock and light. It was weird. The few other electrical outlets in the room were already taken by lamps and the tv, so something had to be unplugged if we wanted to charge our phones. If I would have been staying there for business, this would have been a problem, because I’d have my phone, laptop, printer, and other items that would need to be plugged in, and there wouldn’t be any space. Parking was odd – you went up a ramp to go to the main entrance, and then had to go down a narrow, circular ramp to get to the parking lot. Upon parking, you had to walk up a steep staircase to get back up to the front entrance. There should be an entrance on the parking level. For me, the neighborhood was convenient, as it was just across the street from the theatre, but about a block in the other direction, the area started getting sketchy. Neighborhoods like that don’t bother me, but if you’re someone who tightens your grip on your purse when you see a homeless person on the street, you won’t be comfortable there. If you are looking to be in an area with activity, shopping, and restaurants, I’d suggest looking somewhere else. So, would I stay there again? For personal travel, possibly, if it was a good rate and convenient to the area I needed to be. I liked the décor, the rooms and public space were clean, and the staff was friendly. For business travel, probably not – the lack of power outlets really bothered me.

Overall experience was good except when housekeeping came into the room when a do not disturb sign was on the door.

It was great. We had (3) rooms reserved for family coming in from Ellicott City, Chestertown, MD, and Parker, Colorado, to join us in welcoming our daughter coming home from a (7) month Naval deployment on the USS Bainbridge (DDG96). The rooms were roomy, the breakfast selection and quality great, and the staff very accomodating and friendly. I always select Holyday Inn Express if provided a choice.

The staff was great when we had to return to the desk for more keys. We could not get into our rooms when we went out because the door keys de-activated. When we asked the maid to return to clean our room after 5-10 mins. she did not understand what we were saying because she did not speak english, therefore our room was not cleaned on the 2nd day.

My wife and I were in town for a concert so we only stayed one night. Over all the place was nice, lots of restaurants, stores, and clubs within walking distance. Big mall almost directly across the street. Staff was helpful, internet worked well, room was clean and had everything you need. Think that the $19.00 a night parking is a little high, but other than that everything was good. I'd stay again if we ever go to Norfolk again.

The staff was friendly and anticipated our needs. It is just a short walk to the Norva theater and the room was a great value for such a nice place!

We stayed two nights over Palm Sunday weekend. The hotel was clean, conveniently located between Norfolk and Virginia Beach, and very friendly. The breakfast was delicious with a good variety of hot and cold foods. The best service was when we were allowed to pop corn in the hotel kitchen with employee supervision! It's a Sunday night tradition for us and we were visiting our soldier just back from deployment! Will definitely stay again. Easy on/off the expressway too.

The name "Waterside" suggests that they are on a sandy beach, but in fact they are on a polluted river with no beach. They charge a lot for parking at this hotel, even if you are staying there. They also charge for cable Internet access. There was a power outtage while we were there.

Needed to get away for New Years Eve and it was great. Nice city view. Nice little skyline.

We stayed at this hotel while visiting the beach. Although it was a little drive to the beach, it was a really nice hotel at an affordable price. Room service was really slow. We requested more towels and blankets and eventually had to go down and get them ourselves from the front desk after being told the items would be brought to us. The hotel pool and hot tub was closed on our second day there which was a bummer because we were really looking forward to using it! The complimentary breakfast was really good. I would stay at this hotel again but not for a beach visit (because of the drive). I was also expecting there to be more things to do being that the hotel was right next to ODU.

I grew up in Norfolk and this hotel is located in what used to be a bad part of town. This area is now filled with million dollar homes on the water. The hotel is nice enough and well worth what I paid. Its right on the water and has a pool, though not open when I was there. The room was small but would be perfect for 1 or 2 people. It was clean and well taken care of. There are rooms with balconies that seem like they would be very nice. The staff was courteous and pleasant. There is free breakfast both hot and cold items. The eating area was tight so I might suggest loading up and returning to your room. The hotel lived up to a nice, clean, pleasant hotel that is well located on the water. Luxury, no. Comfortable, yes. If you want a room with a balcony, make sure you reserve the right type of room as I did not and the reservation could not be changed.

This was a pleasure trip and the hotel made it. The staff was very knowledgeable and friendly. It IS a beach hotel, so the weather has given it some wear and tear. The beds were alittle hard. There was no meat or catsup at the hot breakfast bar. That was minor since the rest of the food was delicious. Grounds and room were very clean. Beautiful landscaping. Coffee, hot choclate and internet 24 hr "easy" access.

The hotel itself is fine. The tenants who stay there for longer periods of time (contractors/workers) must work in the hotel ALL Night long. Banging and slamming doors, walking and knocking upstairs like there's construction going on. What's that all about? Sleep before you stay here because there's no sleeping once you get there.

I arrived at the hotel very late at night, i called the number that was in my confirmation and a night attendant came down within minutes to let me in. I thought it was kind of weird that the front desk was closed but the security outside surveying the area made me feel a little safer. I'm guessing they need security to keep all the crazy's away. overall good stay, nice staff, okay rooms, okay amenities. they could however liven up the decor. the location was perfect!!! if you need everything in walking distance this hotel would be perfect.

Nice clean new rooms. Their pet friendliness drew us to their location plus their reasonable rates. Recommend to families passing through.

Hotel is new, rooms spacious, our dog was comfortable but limited "green" walking area. Fast, efficient elevator and pleasant lobby/breakfast area. Interior design well done.

I booked this hotel to enjoy the Norfolk area over the weekend. Unfortunately there were 2k plus high school age kids in town for DECA. I did not appreciate the hotel not mentioning they had a large amount kids staying there this weekend and for the most part unsupervised. Low and behold, Saturday night from about mid-night until 230 AM we laid awake listening to four of the young ladies who were screaming and carrying on in the adjoining room...unsatisfactory at mulitiple levels. Otherwise the hotel was clean and pleasant, minus all the noise.

Me and the lady had a great time there. Slight mixup with the internet and had no pool there. It was close enough to downtown, the beach and the airport.

I was visiting my husband in Norfolk, where he is stationed. I would have liked the hotel to have a pool, and better pillows, but overall it was a great stay...seemed to be newly remodeled and very clean. Excellent customer service, the staff was so friendly and helpful! Also, free shuttle back and forth from the airport and anywhere within five minutes of the the hotel really beats the expensiveness of the taxis in the area!!!

We stayed 2 nights - we were not informed that we had to pay for the internet when signing up for the hotel or told about it when we confirmed with hotel. Cost was $3.00 a night for password. Checking in took about 20 minutes-we were the only ones checking in at that time. The room could have been cleaner, towels and wash clothes were stained. The 2nd night were went back - the only thing that was attended to was our bed - it was made, and the trash can was emptied. Sweeper was not run - towels were the same and so were the wash clothes from the night before. I was not impressed with the Hotel and area at all. We need to do our homewrok on Hotels next trip.

I loved the hotel! The staff was above and beyond nice! The only thing I disliked was that the walls are paper thin. You can hear everything...and I mean everything that is going on next door. Other than that I loved the place. Very close to the Naval Base, which was fantastic because I was visiting my husband there! I would definitely come back again.

We chose this hotel because of the convenient location to Virginia Beach, Williamsburg and the Eastern Shore. The hotel room itself was fine; clean with average amenities. The surroundings themselves were not the greatest, but even after exploring Norfolk we never really found the "great" part of town. Overall, I would probably not stay here again, not because I was unhappy with the hotel but because I was not at all impressed with Norfolk. On the other hand, if you are simply looking for something near a ton of major interstates and are not overly concerned with safety or comfort, then this hotel works fine. If you have to stay in this area, I would try to find something near the Virginia Beach Convention Center (which is on the beach and still quite accessible) or the Ghent neighborhood (historic area with some great shops and restaurants). Lastly, if you decide to stay at this hotel, plan some extra time for breakfast. You are required to eat your food, including coffee, inside the lobby.

Used as a stop over. Arrived late and left early. Nice and clean at low cost. Met our needs.

For the price we paid it was pretty good. Nothing fancy but it worked just fine.

The only con was upon check-in. They only had one person working and I waited 15 minutes at 11:20 PM to be checked in. The rooms were clean and the breakfast was a full hot buffet. It is the perfect hotel if you are attending a funtion for VWC!!!

The hotel itself is very nice. Our stay was marred because even though I requested a non-smoking room, we got stuck in a smoking room. [...] The thing that got me is that the hotel advertises a complimentary breakfast. Upon check-in, we were told breakfast would be $7. After the room fiasco, I had to request a free breakfast for me and my guest, the hotel didn't even offer it to us! We sprayed a half bottle of a "Febreeze" type spray throughout the entire room just to get through the night because no other rooms could be found in the area (Hampton Jazz Fest weekend).

Requested a smoke-free room. They assigned me a smoking room. I went back to front desk to change and they assigned me a new room. This room, too, was a smoking room. Returned to the front desk for the third time (carrying all my luggage) and they finally assigned me a smoke-free room. Unfortunately, the smoke-free room still smelled of smoke. Upon departure, all my clothes smelled of smoke.

Close to NSU. Fine for a one night stay. Nothing fancy.

Okay hotel for the price. The first night we stayed we had extremely loud neighbors but the second night was much better.

seems a few white folks got here from the internet.seems like a pimp was working 2 girls out of the end room..then there was the black guy smoking crack on the stairs to the second level,,not a family place for sure.. We won't stay there again for sure!!! I guess we were ther friday night and the welfare checks had just come in

Other than the staff being pretty nice and the check in check out process being super easy, there are no good comments on this hotel. It was in a horrible location with sketchy people walking around all hours of the night. The room was dirty especially the bath tub which looked like it hadn't been cleaned in months. There was a hole in the wall next to the bed and the room needed major repairs. "High-Speed" internet connection was awful. Disgusting hotel, awful location, felt extremely unsafe.
