The House
The earliest construction of the Porter Springs Farmhouse pre-dates the Civil War & has been continuously owned by the same family. It was part of the Queen of the Mountains hotel & resort, situated just a short distance from the Farmhouse & was located in what was known as the community of Porter Springs. Queen of the Mountains, referred to by family as “The Old Hotel,” was a summer get-away for many people in Atlanta because of the cooler weather & the legendary benefits of the springs on the property. Dinner was enjoyed with orchestral music & there was a bowling alley & other entertainments. Cold outdoor showers were the norm because running water was not available. Travel from Atlanta was usually a two-day journey by coach, with a stop in Gainesville.

It’s believed that Porter Springs Farmhouse began as a caretaker’s or hunter’s cabin. The house was given to my great uncle by my great-great grandfather, Colonel Henry Patillo Farrow, the owner of the Old Hotel. The original house constitutes the oldest part of the Farmhouse & includes the living room & two bedrooms, all having painted surfaces. The “newer” part of the house is the log portion. Construction began in 1909 when my great-uncle learned that his future bride’s dream was to live in a log house. The wood used to build the Farmhouse consists of some American Chestnut, which grew prolifically around the house until the blight in the early 1940’s. The house was added onto over the years with whatever wood was available on the surrounding land.

Throughout the generations, the Farmhouse has been a gathering place for young & old alike. Games were a beloved past time, family gatherings were common & practical jokes abounded. Frog gigging at night, making corncob pipes for rabbit tobacco, visiting Trahlyta’s grave (Stonepile Gap) in the dark to see if she’d speak to visitors, hiking Blood Mountain & telling ghost stories were some of the favorite memories of the older generation.

Because the house is so old, we have unwelcome visitors from time to time & you might see a mouse. However, we have made them feel so unwelcome in recent years that it’s a rare occurrence. There is also the dust factor. Try as we might to clean the house, it just sheds dirt & dust. Therefore, a visit to Porter Springs Farmhouse isn’t for everyone but the person who appreciates history & can imagine camping indoors with the comforts of heat, air conditioning, internet, dishwasher, big-screen tv, home office & oven/stove.

Explorations
Around the house, you’ll see some evidence of the Old Hotel. Some fun explorations include spending some time with the green benches on the front porch where late 1800’s visitors to the Old Hotel carved their names into the benches. Try googling them & see what you can learn! Also on the porch are lights on both sides of the front door that are taken from old stagecoaches. Try writing a story about what it would be like to ride in a stagecoach! Inside the house, the dining room furniture is original to the house & the dining room table is from the Old Hotel.

Because rodents were always a problem in the past (sometimes in the present!), the kitchen cabinets are protected by hooks on the interior & wooden locks on the exterior. Similar locks were employed on bathroom, bedroom & exterior doors. The windows are “locked” with wooden locks & a nail. Feel free to explore the house & all of the interesting ways in which every day life was lived.

Sites &Sounds
Many different animals have been raised over the years at the Farmhouse including chickens, goats & most recently, Angus cattle. Today, neighbors raise Angus cattle & they surround the Farmhouse. Grazing on private property, they come close enough to the house to hear them chewing the grass, snorting & calling out to their young. Because bulls are also present, wandering the pasture or going down to the creeks is absolutely forbidden. Dogs must be leashed when they go outside so they don’t risk running into the pasture & getting injured or spooking the cattle.

There are many other animals around the house. We have seen bears, deer, turkeys & hear the calls of many birds, including owls. Our favorite place to sit & enjoy the wildlife is the front porch where there is a frequent breeze - even on the hottest days.

Please note: This is an old cabin that has been updated. It still has a lot of old cabin quirks & features. The fireplaces are not functional! They were kept for their historical value.

This cabin nailed it—it was perfect. Everything matched the description, the space was well furnished, and the kitchen had everything we needed to cook without any fuss. The beds were incredibly comfortable. The screened-in porch was awesome our for morning coffee and evening unwinding. And our corgi, Ellie, discovered her new favorite entertainment: cow-watching. She was completely fascinated. Easy, relaxing, and way too enjoyable to leave—we’d come back in a heartbeat.

This cabin was even better than the pictures! The property is surrounded by cow pasture so we got to see them up close and personal which was a nice surprise. The property is so charming. The cabin itself is rustic and so charming with floors that slope and old doors that creak in the best way. The kitchen has a working stove, microwave, dishwasher, fridge, and toaster as well as many ingredients ready to use for cooking. We were able to cook fresh biscuits and sausage each morning without issue. We also used the fire pit each night for roasting s'mores. The gazebo next to the fire pit has cafe lights you can turn on which add a pleasant touch. The beds were all very comfortable and well appointed with fluffy duvets and pillows. The location was also great because it felt secluded yet was close enough to restaurants and amenities as well as lots of parks, waterfalls, and hiking trails. We had the best time making memories with our girls and our dog loved it too! We highly recommend a stay here!

The cabin is overall a step back in time. It has a lot of old rustic charm with the uneven floors made of plywood and antique furnishings. Kitchen has been upgraded to modern appliances and very well stocked Our biggest issue was our main goal was to get away from life, spend time together and chill out and relax for a couple days watching movies. The TV would not connect to Wi-Fi so we had to use our phone hotspots the whole time. Luckily my husbands worked as I could not even get my hotspot to work on it. They offered to bring us a new tv but not till late in the day on our last day there. At that point we had found a work around. If you need a reliable internet this we would not serve you well. It’s quiet and peaceful but was not able to serve our goal in being there. Management was very responsive.

Great location! Close to many attractions, but also peaceful and surrounded with nature and beautiful place to view the night sky and stars. Favorite spots were the dining room and the screened in back porch.Host was exceptionally responsive and helpful throughout our stay.Visited beautiful Amicalola Falls, toured Consolidated Gold Mine, DeSoto Falls and enjoyed Dahlonega’s town square. Great food and coffee!

If I could rate this less than one star I would give it negatives. There was clear evidence of a mouse in the home. A mouse nest in one bed and mouse poop in another bed. Mouse feces in the kitchen. The pictures are not a clear depiction of the property. I understand it is rustic, but I don’t understand how it could be a VRBO approved property used for any inhabitants.

The host was fabulous. Never needed to contact them for any issues but they were there by text within minutes of me reaching out to them for directions, things to do in the area and to say goodbye. The house was great and transported you back to a time that you read about in history. Would love the chance to stay there again.

We had stayed at this site a few months earlier when the weather temperature wasnt an issue. Because of the nature of the type of cabin structure , we had some difficulty getting the inside comfy. (Outside temps in the low 20s). The host coordinated with us and we were able to enjoy our long weekend.

Excellent communication. Cabin was perfect. We were very comfortable and had a lot of fun leaping into the very tall comfortable beds. We loved the heated blankets. We were able to enjoy the cows next door who were very vocal with us. the deer running through the neighboring property were fun to watch. We were able to get to the local Walmart in 13 minutes and that's with me driving very slow as I am not accustomed to driving in mountain areas. the town had a lot to offer. The fire pit outside was great and we enjoyed plenty of time on the front patio. Very charming rustic and a good time.

Long post. The picture were exactly as the cabin appeared. Overall it served its purpose. However, I believe this cabin is managed by a management company and not the owners. Reason I say this? Well as a business owner I feel they failed their customer. First night there, we had a bat in the home which in return bit me and forced me to the ER where I began rabies treatment. There was an awful sewage smell and when it was brought to the attention of the company we where told it's an old home and they would monitor it. We were forced to smell this the entire time. Washing machine leaked the entire time and you could tell where it had been leaking for awhile. The second day we cooked breakfast and dinner at the cabin. While retrieving utincels from the drawers there was an extensive amount of rat droppings. We cleaned them up and cleaned all silverware and proceeded on. Chimney access where not sealed very good which is where we heard some bats on the last night. All in all I feel the management company, (if it's managed by one) has failed the owners of the property and their guest. As a business owner I feel it's our job to check the quality of work being performed by the hired hand. I think they failed to make an attempt to inspect a potential problem with the sewage. We were told it's an old house and basically it is what is. I own a house from the 1890's and being it has a crawl space it's very easy to maintain proper plumbing and p-traps. Far from that it was good

We loved the rustic cabin. The sleeping, dining and parking were first class. Everything was as advertised so we all had a wonderful stay. The only suggestion is to add additional lighting in the kitchen area. Also adding a power strip in the bedrooms would be nice as the existing outlets are difficult to access. These did not diminish our enjoyment of our stay,

Great Place to experience pre 1900s living. My daughter-in-law brought a Meter that measures energy (Ghosts) it pretty much Lit up in every room. Not surprising as old as the house is. Though it raised an eye brow. And if they were real they were friendly. No midnight encounters. The outdoor gazebo BBQ pit was awesome. The overall look of the place reminded me of the Ponderosa ranch house on Banana. So 5 star review from me

This place is a gem, very peaceful and quiet, yet close to Dahlonega and all of the wonderful things to do in North Georgia. You truly feel like you have stepped back in time but with comfy beds. If you like waking up to the smell of bacon frying and coffee brewing, then you will love this historical old cabin. And that screened porch with the bed swing is the perfect place to spend a quiet afternoon with a good book! There is a claw foot tub for soaking and the kitchen has all of the basics. If you like modern and pristine, this place is not for you. However, if you appreciate a rambling, serene and picturesque getaway, I think you will enjoy your stay!

Austin & Sydney’s Wedding weekend

We live in Cumming but this was my Son’s Wedding weekend. And we needed to be close to Wolf Mountain Winery. For all of the pre-wedding & weddings festivities. This cabin was absolutely beautiful. I have never seen anything like it before. We absolutely loved it. We just wish we would have been able to spend more time in it. I would love to stay again. The pictures do not do the cabin justice. There is a huge screened in porch. And a very nice outside area with a fire pit. And a covered pull through or parking at the side door to the screened in piece. This cabin was very rustic. Beautiful and so much space. I highly recommend this cabin. And the host was amazing. And always responded back quickly.
