We were given zero info. We did not even have the address. We had to figure out the ferry, groceries & island life on our own. The first day was awful. We were told the cabin was steps away from the ferry. In actuality, it's a half mile up hill. We saw no transportation options, so we hauled our 50-pound suitcase up the hill. It may be helpful to tell you we are 59yo & 61yo and disabled. That walk nearly killed us. The first night was in the 40s, and we had no heat. We almost froze to death. The owner said they'd been to the property and the heat was working for her. The handyman came after I told the owner that we would have to terminate our agreement if the heat was not fixed. The handyman told us that the heater (which was ancient & terrifying) was actually unplugged. So the owner couldn't have been at the cabin and found the heat to be working. The microwave blew a fuse, and the handyman grumbled that he'd have to go down into the cellar to reset it. He said he'd asked the owner to move the fuse box for years, but she's refused. Quite honestly, that attitude of hers was reflected all over that cabin. It was run down and so much was broken. On two occasions, the pedestal sink in the bathroom fell into our laps when we were on the toilet. Further inspection showed that the sink wasn't properly anchored to the wall and the sink & pedestal weren't actually attached. Yard wasnât well-maintained & next door was a junkyard. Run down, unsafe, no character.
