Historic Pump House Inn | 10 BR | Tavern | Hot Tub
Summary:
Step into real Pocono history. Built in 1842 and welcoming guests since 1906, this legendary estate once hosted Richard Nixon, Tom Cruise, and John Travolta. Today it's a 10BR, 5,300SF group retreat on 3.5 acres: Antique wooden tavern with 3 55" TVs, SONOS speakers and wood-burning fireplace, 7-person hot tub, game room w/ pool table & 85" TV, DR table seating 20+. 6 full & 3 half baths. Minutes from Skytop Lodge. Wonderfully old & creaky — not a Four Seasons, but an unforgettable stay.
The Space:
A Piece of Pocono History You Can Actually Rent
Long before "STR" was a category, this property was already a Pocono landmark. The main house was originally built as a farmhouse in 1842, and it opened its doors as an inn in 1906 — making it well over a century old as a hospitality property. Over the decades it operated under a few different names, most notably The Levis Falls House before becoming The Pump House Inn. During its heyday in the 1970s and '80s, when celebrities and theater stars flocked to the nearby Pocono Playhouse in Mountainhome, The Pump House became a go-to dining and lodging spot for the famous and the powerful — guests and diners are reported to have included former President Richard Nixon and actors John Travolta and Tom Cruise. The Pocono Playhouse itself drew names like Betty Grable, Walter Matthau, Shelley Winters, and Gloria Vanderbilt over the years, and The Pump House was part of that orbit of old-Hollywood-meets-the-mountains glamour.
This is a big, characterful, lived-in historic home — not a sterile new-construction mega-cabin. Here's the rundown:
10 bedrooms | 6 full baths, 3 half baths
5,300 square feet of living space on 3.5 acres
An old-school tavern room with a real working wood-burning fireplace — exactly the kind of stone-and-hearth space the property has had since the 1800s (now w/ 3 TVs for a sports bar atmosphere)
A game room with a pool table, an 85" TV
5 SONOS speakers wired between the game room and the tavern for whole-zone sound
Plenty of old farmhouse-style tables and a full bar, true to the home's original tavern roots
A dining room table that seats 20+ built for big family reunions, milestone birthdays, and multi-generational gatherings
A large, commercial-style kitchen capable of handling a full house of guests cooking and serving at once
A brand-new 7-person hot tub
An outdoor fire pit and a brand-new Weber grill
3.5 acres of grounds with extensive outdoor space for games, gatherings, and just spreading out
Fully stocked throughout for a turnkey group stay
An Important, Honest Note
This home is old — and it shows that in the best and most charming ways, but also literally. Floors creak. They're a little crooked in places. Doors and stairs have character that comes with a structure dating back to the 1800s. This is a historic property, not a newly built luxury cabin, and it should be booked with that expectation front and center. If your group is looking for hotel-grade polish, flawless finishes, and zero quirks, this isn't that. But if your group wants space, history, atmosphere, and a true "we have the whole place to ourselves" group experience, this delivers in a way that very few properties in the Poconos can match. The trade-off for all that old-world charm and square footage is exactly that: it's old. Guests who come in with the right expectations tend to love it; guests expecting brand-new everything should look elsewhere. We are constantly working and improving the property as well - new grill, new hot tub, new TVs, speakers, etc.
Location: Minutes from Skytop
The home sits in Canadensis, in the heart of the northern Poconos — and just a few miles from Skytop Lodge, one of the most storied resorts in Pennsylvania. Skytop opened in 1928 on a 5,500-acre wooded plateau, designed with help from the Olmsted Brothers (the landscape architects behind Central Park) and a golf course laid out by Robert White, founding president of the PGA. It remains a AAA Four Diamond property today, with a historic 18-hole golf course, a 75-acre lake, nearly 30 miles of hiking trails, an adventure center with zip-lining and ropes courses, horseback riding, ice skating, and seasonal skiing and tubing. Guests don't need to be staying at Skytop itself to enjoy the broader area's pull — the golf course, lake activities, and trail network make the whole Skytop/Canadensis corridor one of the most scenic and activity-rich pockets of the Poconos.
Beyond Skytop, the immediate area offers Buck Hill Golf Course, Promised Land State Park (hiking, biking, boating), Paradise Trout Preserve (PA's first licensed trout hatchery, established 1902), and the broader Pocono Mountains restaurant and brewery scene. It's a setting that's equally suited to a relaxed family reunion weekend, a golf trip, a bachelor/bachelorette party, or a corporate retreat — all anchored by a home with genuine, storied character and the space to host a crowd comfortably.
Bottom Line
A rare combination: real historic pedigree, serious group-sized capacity (10 bedrooms, 9 total baths, seating for 20+ at dinner), a long list of "fun" amenities (hot tub, pool table, tavern fireplace, whole-home Sonos), and a location minutes from one of the Poconos' best-known resort areas. It's not polished, and it's not pretending to be — it's old, big, and full of personality, which is exactly the point.
